Project Alizeti
Project type
River Water treatment
Date
August 2026
Location
Mathare, Nairobi
Project Alizeti is a wastewater treatment and resupply pilot project in Mabatini Ward, Mathare. It deploys biological and ultrafiltration treatment techniques to treat 20,000 litres of water from the nearby Mathare River, availing it to members of the nearby community at a reduced rate to the normal KES 5 for a 20-litre jerrican.
The project gets its name from 'alizeti', the Kiswahili word for sunflower, owing to the sprouting sunflowers that grow on the community park where the module will be placed. Project Alizeti is part of a wider riparian land reclamation project, that puts riverside land in Mathare to productive use.
Supported by the United Nations Development Programme and partnered with the Mathare Social Justice Centre, Project Alizeti redefines the water value chain by making wastewater reuse the cheapest way of sourcing safe water.
